Capel Iwan Archive 2004

04 - Pobl a Lleoliadau - Places & People

This is part of a series of web pages, assembled by Jim Batten, from files provided by Mr. Ieuan James.
It is based on a CD ROM, prepared by Capel Iwan PTA, to mark the retirement of Mr. James in 2004, and celebrate his twenty eight years as head teacher of Capel Iwan School.

Use this link to get back to the list of sections.

There is also a spreadsheet file (Capel Iwan Primary School History.xls) which is mainly to do with the school, but contains notes relating to some of the photos in this section. A summary of these notes being used in the file-name of each image, where possible.

The CD sleeve included the following note -

An acknowledgement must be made to the late Miss. Eilwen Jenkins, (a former teacher at both Parcylan and Capel Iwan schools) who initially assembled and annotated most of the older photos in 1988, and thanks to Mr. Iwan Jenkins for allowing her work to be used on the CD.

“Cwteri” is a small house on the right-hand side of the road, about three-quarters of the way between the Capel Iwan chapel and Black Oak (sometimes called Black Cock).
The house is not shown on the 1831 map, but is on the 1891 map.
The use of [b]red brick in the construction of the window and door arches is consistent with the house being built in the mid 19th century.
One family that occupied the house in the mid 20th century belonged to John (the coal) Evans.
The house was last occupied in the 1980s.
Image "Cwteri 15c" just contained the above background information.

As it stated on the CD, this ... is not, by any means, a "finished article", as it is hoped that future editions ... will include additional photos, memories, articles and research; which are invited for contribution by any member of the community.

Please eMail me any further images and / or information which I will then try to include in the web pages.
